Talk/Discussion

Welcome to the universe!

'The solar system: its origin, development and eventual demise.'

Also:

'Where are all the "Little Green Men? "

I'm quite happy to talk and there will be, I hope, plenty of discussion and questions/comment as we go along.

Here's something I prepared earlier:

My very educated mother just served us nachos.

Mum's the word please, if you understand.

Don't worry if you don't.

1  Debut

Something else to think about during the talk.

2   Cosmology

2.1
We will travel together on a short journey in our time.  Many thousands of miles in cosmic time. Had this been 4019 we could go to the other end of the universe.

2.2
Our universe is both ancient and vast, and expanding out farther and faster every day.

2.3
This accelerating universe, the ... energy that seems to be

behind it, and other puzzles like the exact nature of the Big

Bang and the early evolution of the universe are among the

great puzzles of cosmology.

We can at least find a definition of cosmology. cosmos-ology

2.4
Cosmology ... is a branch of astronomy concerned with

the studies of the origin and evolution of the universe,

from the Big Bang to today and on into the future.

We know more about the man in the moon, don't we!

He's feeling miserable as he isn't mentioned later.

The Big Bang is on our itinary.

We will go back to the beginning of the universe. The Big Bang page is almost upon us. If it is becoming larger, then it's obvious that it was smaller at the start.

We couldn't go wrong if Stephen Hawking were involved at this early stage.

His last book "Brief Answers to Big Questions" opened with this text:

People have always wanted answers to the big questions.

1   Where did we come from?

2   How did the universe begin?

3   What is the meaning and design
     behind it all?

4   Is there anyone out there?

We may not answer even one question today.

Re question 4, all we might say is 'There should be.'.  Even if only little green men.

We can, however, aim to enjoy our time together!

Continuing with Stephen Hawking:

The creation account
s of the past now seem less relevant and credible.

They have been replaced by a variety of what can only be called superstitions, ranging from New Age to Star Trek.

But real science can be far stranger than science fiction, and much more satisfying.

Don’t feel embarrassed or guilty re any shortfall in scientific knowledge.

                                            PS by Hawking

The problem is, most people believe that real science is too difficult and

complicated for them to understand. But I don’t think this is the case.

To do research on the fundamental laws that govern the universe would

require a commitment of time that most people don’t have; the world

would soon grind to a halt if we all tried to do.

We may not answer even one question today.  We can, however, aim to enjoy our time together!
